John, I understand your point, but I'm still confused. (Believe me, I want to get as much as I can for my work!) ;^) The question becomes, then what do I do when I retail these same works, at the one high-end retail show I do? Or from my website? (I'm removing the jewelry retail catalog from my site, but plan to replace it with a gallery of my hangings.) What is the incentive for galleries to buy me work, if their customers get the idea that they can come directly to me and buy it for the original price? I might not care about local galleries (but I do!), but it seems like this would shut down relationships as I go further afield.... You sold your knives to galleries at your price, then they marked them up to whatever their market would bear. But did that preclude you from selling to the public, at your same price? Wouldn't the galleries in your area feel that you were undercutting them, and stop purchasing your work? I know there's something I'm not "getting" when it comes to the one-offs, and I now it isn't going to be a wholesale situation. But it's hard for me to envision a scenerio where I sell to *everyone* for one price (my price), and galleries would be happy about that, especially if they are within a couple of hours' drive of where I live/sell. Not being argumentative, just trying to wrap my brain around this one.... By the way, someday can you get your webmaster to change the format of this comment box? Not being able to see the whole page of my message is frustrating. I feel like I'm on a microfilm reader! (one of my jobs from my former life.....)
