There is MUCH discussion on nearly every forum about the dearth of buy-sell, "fondly" referred to as B/S, which it is. Welcome onto the bandwagon!

What to do? Even a mountain can taken down by a teaspoon at a time, albeit slowly. This problem will go away if we artists take a stand. How?

Meanwhile, gather the cards of everyone at shows whose work is truly theirs. Ask them to do the same at shows they do.

Approach the promoter and politely ask if they would like to turn their show around to 95-100% handmade. If the answer is positive, offer to share your list of artisans as the first step in helping them. If the answer is negative, well, word of mouth is a powerful force, but be cautious as charges of libel and slander are nasty companions.

Start your own show. I did. Our first venture was positive and the community was pleasantly surprised with the quality they found. We got lots of support from the local media, thankfully, and businesses were happy to post fliers, etc. It was a lot of work but suits me right down to the ground. I loved it!

On another forum, one poster stated they had put together a petition of complaint which the offended artists signed and took to the promoter. Don't remember the results, if any, however.

Some folks in Arkansas, at Applegate (??) rebelled and walked out in mid-show, en-masse, I read. I packed up mid-show in Wichita on T'giving weekend and wrote a long letter to the promoter afterwards. These are drastic measures and I hope the message is getting out there to promoters.

We can post on these forums, carefully stating our own experiences at any given show, so that other serious artists will be aware of what to expect.

If you want lists of other forums, let me know and I'll gladly share them with you. You may email me, if you'd rather.

Don't give up! You're not alone in this. Together we can make a difference.

Wherever you go take joy!
Blessings, Sherrill
