I've got this one figured out -- sorta. I'm running a new version of Zone Alarm, which includes some ad blocking software. Pop ups or pop unders are gone for good, but banner ads are handled by the amount of time they take to load. If you set the timer high, then all the banners will load. If you set it very low, so that it blocks all but the fastest loading banner ads, then Internet Explorer just reaches into my cache and grabs something at random to put up in it's place. I've now seen this happen on other sites I've visited.
What I don't know is whether ALL large images that do not load quickly are involved, or if it's just an unfortunate coincidence that the one image on my site being affected is called *banner.jpg.* Could be just a poor choice of names.
From my perspective, seeing these images in places where they shouldn't be is way more unsettling to me than having to view the banner ads themselves. I have a message in to ZA support and willkeep you posted.
