You can ratchet this down as tightly as you want. Obviously, the name used is a flag. Then you can ask for three trade and one bank references, even if you aren't going to offer them terms. Checking these will give you some clues. And ask for a copy of the business registration form from the state -- only accountants register their names as their businesses; just look at the signs on any Main Street.
If you're still suspicious of their having a storefront or not, then ask for a couple of samples of business literature -- letterhead, card etc. (and not just something knocked out on an inkjet printer, either). Biz forms for most storefront businesses are not purchased off-the-shelf at Staples or Office Depot. If then you are still not certain of their legitimacy, ask for photocopies of recent local display advertising.
Somewhere along the line, the *interior designers* will get the hint.
