Have you read any of his work? If you haven't, then check out his The Medium is the Message; you'll find that there are no degrogatory connotations to the quote. The point is that even the most mundane object can be transformed into art by the application of a little of that Socratic "speculation" we were discussing on TCR board -- art comes in many forms and, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. I'm a fly fisher, and the art of tying flies is every bit as authentic as anything produced by a hot glass artist. Fly tiers just have a different mindset -- they are most happy when their creations catch big trout. Chihuly, on the other hand, is most happy when one of his installations is picked up by a collector. Same happy, different reward system. Actually, someone tying exquisite flies would do very well on the wholesale circuit -- we need more men's gifts.
