Deborah, have you checked out Tim McCreight's books on metalsmithing? I think Rio Grande has one or two of his books or videos.
And have you thought about Precious Metal Clay or the other brand of silver clay? It's that clay made of organic binder with silver or gold particles mixed in. You fire it in a small kiln, like an enameling kiln, and the binder burns off, leaving silver behind. It's not the equivalent of silversmithing (for example, because the silver isn't as dense as worked silver, it's not good for findings) but it might provide some interesting possibilities.
