2003 Top 100 Retailers of American Craft Announced
Philadelphia, PA (July 12, 2003) The 2003 Top 100 Retailers of American Craft were announced at a ceremony today at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia. The presentation was held in conjunction with the annual Buyers Market of American Craft, the world’s largest wholesale arts event, at which artists exhibit their original designs to craft retailers from across the country.
In its ninth year, the Top 100 Retailers of American Craft is the only program of its kind. More than 26,000 craft artists from throughout the U.S. and Canada were polled by NICHE magazine, the national trade publication for craft retailers and sponsor of the program. Criteria for selection include treating artists with courtesy and respect, paying on time, promoting and marketing American crafts, contributing time and energy to the craft community, as well as mentoring emerging artists. More than 670 galleries, retail stores and museum shops were nominated.
Topeo Gallery of New Hope, PA was named the 2003 Craft Retailer of the Year. Other retailers in the Top 10 are as follows (in rank order): Grovewood Gallery of Asheville, NC; Gifted Hand of Wellesly, MA; Studio 41 of Benecia, CA; Show of Hands of Denver, CO; An American Craftsman of Slate Hill, NY; Mountain Laurel Crafts of Berkeley Springs, WV; Clarksville Pottery Galleries of Austin, TX; Craft Company No. 6 of Rochester, NY; and Don Muller Gallery of Northampton, MA.
"Now it is more important than ever to honor small businesses that are committed to selling handmade products made in America," said Wendy Rosen. "These retailers' strong commitment to cooperation and partnership means that time-honored tradition of American crafts will continue to flourish."
NICHE magazine is published by The Rosen Group, an arts marketing and publishing firm based in Baltimore, MD. The Rosen Group also publishes AmericanStyle magazine, a consumer lifestyle publication for collectors and lovers of art and is producer of the Buyers Market of American Craft.
